Bears News · 2018-19 Basketball Team Ready for New Season

The next installment of Bear River basketball has officially been selected and the new team is ready to get things started. The 2018-19 team has a great combination of speed and athleticism coupled with lots of varsity experience. This season’s version of Bear basketball returns four players that spent time starting on a team last year that tied for third place in Region 12 and won 16 games. Two full-time starters are back in juniors Mark Huber and Renn Fonnesbeck. These two players were our leading scorers at 13 and 12 points/per game respectively. Mark and Renn were also our top three-point shooters as they combined for nearly 100 3-point shots made during last season. We will look to these two guards to continue to give us an offensive spark as well as be solid floor generals with their ball-handling and passing ability. Seniors Parker Coombs and Wyatt Roholt  both shared time starting last season as well and add a great deal of experience and leadership to the squad. Parker and Wyatt averaged 6 points and 3 rebounds per contest. Both of these seniors guards are exceptionally quick and can penetrate and finish at the rim as well as shoot the deep ball. In addition, we will look to Parker and Wyatt to lead us defensively with their athleticism and competitiveness. Kelton Summers is the third senior that will compete for the Bears this season. Kelton is a solid all-around player and can play both on the perimeter as well as in the post. We will rely on Kelton to be a tenacious defender as well as contribute offensively with his ability to shoot the three and handle the basketball. Logan Litchford, a big, rugged junior and Tanner Orton, another long, athletic junior will be called upon to help us in the post and with rebounding duties. Both of these players should see meaningful minutes on the varsity floor.

The remainder of the varsity team is comprised of eight sophomores that had a very successful freshmen campaign last season. Many of these sophomores also played extensive minutes as part of the sophomore and JV teams last year. They are: Chase Carter, Jarett Giles, Devan Greer, Jace Jacobson, Kace Jones, Taden Marble, Josh Payne and Trevin Toone.

The Bear River Bears travel to Lehi for the first test of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 21. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm. The coaches and players would like to thank all of the Bear River fans that so generously give of their time to come out and support the boys. We are grateful to live in such a wonderful community and appreciate all the students and fans for their support.
